Loft Insulation
What it is:
A layer of insulating material laid across your loft floor to stop heat escaping through the roof – the single biggest source of heat loss in most UK homes.
How it works:
Heat rises. Without loft insulation, it passes straight through your ceiling and out through the roof. A thick enough layer (the UK standard is 270mm) acts like a blanket over the top of your home.
Key benefits:
- Usually the cheapest upgrade with the fastest payback of any measure
- Straightforward, low-disruption installation - often done in a single day
- Makes upstairs rooms noticeably warmer in winter, cooler in summer
What it costs:
Typically £400–£1,200 depending on your loft size and whether existing insulation needs topping up or replacing. Often the first thing we recommend, because it pays for itself fastest.
Is it right for your home?
Almost always yes – it’s one of the few upgrades that suits nearly every property, old or new. The main exception is a loft already insulated to modern standards, which we’ll confirm at your assessment rather than assume.
